Next Apple iPhone Nano to rely solely on cloud-based memory?

The next version of the Apple iPhone Nano could be going cloud-only, according to the rumour mill.

The upcoming mini iPhone, thought to be half the size of the iPhone 4, could actually be stripped down to the point it will be capable of receiving only enough memory to buffer media streamed from the cloud. This could be an effort from Apple to cut the cost of the device, as memory is one of the most expensive components.

This raises a number of questions. First of all, the phone will need a certain amount of memory to perform calls, but the main issue is how users will be able to access their music and other data when there is no signal. No listening to music on the Tube, in other words.

It is possible Apple is planning to pair up the new Nano with offerings from the cloud-based music service Lala, which it acquired last year. Chances are also high the ‘Mobile Me’ cloud service will become free; the service lets users store data remotely and synchronise this between all their devices. At the moment this costs $99 per year, but could potentially become a freebie from Apple to tempt uptake.

  • I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
