Here’s news that will make the legions of intrepid Kinect motion controller hackers happy; Microsoft are to release an official non-commercial SDK kit for Windows to the public this Spring.

Since launching last November, the Kinect has been the focus of a series of hacks in which plucky developers explore new ways to make use of the hardware. Initially Microsoft were skeptical of the merits of the hacks, but soon realised that their popularity was a PR and research boon, throwing up plenty of novel ways that the hardware can be used in new titles.

“The starter kit will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to deep Kinect system capabilities such as audio, system APIs, and direct control of the sensor,” reads the Microsoft release.
