Make no mistake – 3D technology has hit the mobile phone world. LG presented the Optimus 3D phone and Optimus Pad tablet computer at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Optimus 3D phone
This is the world’s first full 3D phone. The Android- run smartphone has 3D screen, and two 5 megapixel cameras so you can take your own 3D pictures and video. No special glasses are required to see the 3D effects, as the 4.3 inch screen is based on so-called ‘autostereoscopic’ technology. The phone also features dedicated 3D user interfaces for the main apps.

Run on a 1 gigahertz dual core processor from Texas Instruments, the phone has 8 gigabytes of memory. The device runs on Android 2.2 Froyo at the moment, but this will be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in the not too distant future, according to LG. No official release date has been announced, but the phone is expected to become available some time in the second quarter of 2011.

The Optimus Pad tablet computer
Another world first is the Optimus Pad, with 3D cameras and screen in the same vein as the phone. The 8.9 inch screen will give the viewer ‘console-quality’ gaming, all the way to widescreen film viewing, LG says. The tablet will however require you to wear 3D glasses to get the full effect – a bit of a wrinkle.

The processor is the Nvidia Tegra 2, running on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Android’s dedicated tablet software offering. The Pad will be available this March.
