After months of speculation, Acer has at last confirmed its new smartphone, the Iconia Smart.

Commentators are already going gaga over the screen – the 4.8in screen has a 21:9 aspect ratio which means you can watch films in the proper cinema format. And more – the screen resolution is 1024×480 (HXGA), meaning it is possible to browse the internet in the device’s landscape mode.

It’s ‘100 per cent tablet, 100 per cent smartphone’, Acer says. This may be pushing it some, but it seems Acer has come a long way towards getting there.

The Iconia boasts a 1 gigahertz Snapdragon processor, 512 megabytes of RAM memory and Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. You also get two cameras – a 8 megapixel camera on the back with an LED flash, and a 2 megapixel camera on the front. The Acer Iconica Smart is expected to become available in April.
