sony_playstation_2.pngBreaking the traditional boundaries between hardware and software branding of PlayStation, Sony are set to branch out by launching the PlayStation Suite cross-platform gaming service, compatible with Android handsets and the newly-revealed Sony NGP handheld games console.

“It expands the PlayStation experience beyond the PSP border. It is the first cross platform endeavour,” said Kaz Hirai, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment at the company’s PlayStation Meeting 2011 in Tokyo.

A “hardware-neutral” gaming platform, it will bring PlayStation games to Android tablets and smartphones, regardless of manufacturer, by overlaying the PlayStation controls onto a phone’s touchscreen.

“The target platform of PS Suite is Android. We will also launch PlayStation Certified to perform content-quality testing in order to ensure PS quality across various devices,” said Hirai.

“We are preparing to launch PlayStation Store for Android-based devices. By delivering PS content over a wider array of devices, we hope to expand the world of PlayStation,” said Hirai.

The news all-but confirms that a Sony Ericcson Xperia handset with some sort of PlayStation branding will be revealed at next month’s MWC event.

The platform will launch “within the next calendar year.”
