A new trademark filed by the folks over at HTC has set tongues wagging that the company’s actually-very-good Sense Android UI could be getting an overhaul.

The “Sensation” trademark applies to “Mobile phones, smartphones, wireless phones, wireless devices, portable computers and personal digital assistants, computer hardware and software for mobile, portable and wireless devices; user interface software; computer hardware and software for user interfacing, telecommunications and telecommunications services; computer hardware and software for transmitting and receiving voice, image, data, audio, video and multimedia content; wireless modems; headsets, headsets with wireless transmission function, connection cables, cradles, mounts, face plates, batteries, power adaptors, chargers, cases, in-vehicle chargers, in-vehicle holders, remote controls, keyboards, microphones, loudspeakers, leather pouches for mobile phones” according to description.

Does this mean an evolution of the Sense UI into something new, perhaps an interface better suited to tablets than mobiles considering the expected Spring release of the rumoured HTC Flyer 7 inch Android tablet?

Alternatively, it could be the first step in a wider re-branding strategy from HTC. With a tablet line-up expected to join the HTC mobile line-up, perhaps Sensation is a new umbrealla under which to put the whole HTC brand. CEO Peter Chou has already expressed he is keen to push the HTC branding to the fore of consumer’s minds, and it’d be a smart decision to introduce a term that would suggest synergy across the company’s portfolio of devices.
