Dell Streak O2 handsets get Android 2.1 update, unlocked models to follow soon

Dell's Streak stradles a fine line between smartphone and tablet at just 5 inches in size, but it's still an impressive bit of kit, and one of the first iPad rivals to hit the shops. The Dell Streak also features a 5MP camera with LED Flash, a1GHz Qualc

Owners of Dell’s tablet-come-mobile phone, the Dell Streak, will find that they can upgrade the device’s Android OS to version 2.1 today, providing they’re are on an O2 contract.

Though the Eclair build of the OS leaked online a few weeks back, O2 are now offering official support for the upgrade, and have posted a detailed set of instructions on how to set up the update. You can view them here.

It’s a pretty simple process, but as ever with a mobile OS update, do make sure to back up any important files you may have stored on the device just in case disaster strikes. You can never be too careful, right?

The 97.57MB download may not be the Froyo 2.2 action Streak owners are desperately holding out for, but it’s still a step in the right direction. A Dell spokesperson also confirmed that the update will soon be available for those who bought the device unlocked, contract-free.
