Cross-platform 3G video calls on iPhone 4, Nokia and Android from Fring

iPhone 4’s FaceTime app, allowing users to make video calls among one another may sound nifty, but it’s got a few glaring limitations that make it not quite as useful as it could/should be. First of all, it’s limited to just calls between fellow iPhone 4 users, and secondly it can only be used over a Wi-Fi connection.

Enter then the latest version of the Fring video calling app. It will let you make video calls between any iPhone 4, Nokia or Android handset, and let you do it on the go over 3G too.

It’s great news for those wanting to make video calls using their data plans, as it was starting to look as though you’d have to get into the sticky business of jailbreaking your iPhone to use FaceTime over 3G otherwise. The flexibility of a cross platform app also makes it much more useful, with far more potential users across the other brands of handsets than jut Apple’s latest gear.

Fring is fully iOS4 multi-tasking enabled, as well as having a social stream of Twitter and Facebook updates.

Keep in mind when using Fring over 3 though that it’s going to be pretty data intensive, so make sure your tariff allows for that or you may face a fairly hefty bill.

Grab Fring for iPhone here.

  • apple is blowing it by bringing out face time and not allowing it to be open to different phones and also only on wifi. this is better even though its a little choppier.. lol..
this is why they should have not gotten rid of the unlimited data plan.. which i have….
