Two thirds consider Google Street View an intrusion of privacy

google street view.jpgWhile Google may see their photo-mapping app Street View as for the navigational good of all mankind, it seems Joe Public are a little more wary of the search giant’s technology. With 95% of the UK to be mapped by the service, new research shows that as many as two thirds of the public feel that Google’s Street View is an “intrusion” of privacy.

73% of the people who called the service an intrusion said they were most angered by the fact they hadn’t given permission for the publishing of images.

Mark Pearson, Managing Director of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, the company which carried out the survey of 1,300 people, was sympathetic to Google’s cause.”The service isn’t for everybody, and I think the main issue is that people feel they’ve had no consultation, despite the fact that many of the images clearly show people, despite Google’s efforts to mask identifying features.

“In honesty, whilst I can appreciate this, it’s unfeasible to expect a company to gain the permission of every single person in the UK,” he concluded.

  • Great Privacy detector but personally objections to street view are because people are embarrassed by the state of their gardens and yards! Maybe street view will encourage a mass “tidy up” of Britain’s sometimes rather shoddy looking front gardens and drives!!!

  • Awesome Coverage…Great Privacy detector…Through this we can caught robbers and also make the world a peaceful place .

  • Awesome coverage! Thanks!
    nice post
    I second albertacowpoke’s question…
I hate guns If no guns of everyone, the world maybe well.
Think they would read the BILL if they had to live by it?

  • I know the law too ecobore – but it’s the principle of the matter – not just law…

  • I object strongly to Street View – and not because of my garden (I don’t have one) as the comment above implies. Firstly, it’s a robbers’ charter – they can case a house and street remotely without ever having to leave home – for example, a case is going on in LA where a gang has done exactly this. Secondly my house is my home and an American private company has made it available for all to view without ever asking my permission. I would guess they are also collecting data on who is viewing it to. And no I have nothing to hide, but privacy is a right.

Just do a street view comparison of the average American front yard to the average British view and you’ll see exactly what I mean! A house-proud and tidy nation we no longer are!
