The PSP’s long-awaited Digital Comics service has gone live, allowing PSP owners to read, browse and buy comic books and graphic novels on Sony’s handheld.

A key feature of the comic viewer is its Autoflow setting, which scans each frame of the comic, individually scaling it to best fit your PSP screen for the most comfortable read. Also planned is the ability to add DVD-like artist/writer commentaries to each issue, giving the digital format an edge over its paper partners.

Many publishers have already signed up to feature on Sony’s online store, including heavyweights such as Marvel and IDW, making Spiderman, X-Men, Transformers and Star Trek tales all available.

The reader itself is free (available from the Playstation Comics website) as are a handful of free issues to whet your appetite with. The store so far has 500-odd comics ready for download, with Sony planning on releasing weekly updates of fresh issues.
