playstation video on demand.JPGAs we revealed earlier this month, PS3 users will have access to the PlayStation Video Delivery service by late November, offering video on demand for all PS3 owners. Though the service is already live Stateside, Sony today released the first details of what will be on offer to UK users.

The “must have list” features: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Hannah Montana: The Movie, Bruno, Angels & Demons, Casino Royale, Crank 2: High Voltage and The Hills Have Eyes.

It’s not much, but it’s a healthy start, with some major blockbusters on offer and far more likely to be revealed in the coming weeks. Movie fans will be able to download the latest releases straight to their PS3 or take them on the go via the PSP. The movies will be available to either rent or buy and will be in both High and Standard definition formats.

Though a late bloomer, the US PlayStation Video Delivery service is miles ahead of the Xbox 360 in terms of the amount of content on offer. US PS3 owners already have access to roughly 2,300 movies and 14,000 TV shows; around 10,000 hours of downloadable video in all.

UK readers shouldn’t hold their breath just yet for similar figures in relation to the UK launch of the PSN video service. Plenty of major movie studios have signed up to distribute their films, including 20th Century Fox, MGM, Paramount, and of course Sony Pictures. However, as each studio deal requires a separate licence for each international territory, it may be some time before we have access to as much content as our friends across the pond.

Tech Digest will have a hands-on report when it launches in the UK on 18th November.
