1080p high-def player coming to YouTube

YouTube is to launch a high-def 1080p player, and it is to be made available to all users within a matter of days.
Currently, the highest available quality on the video streaming site is 720p. The new 1080p option will be full HD, and available also as part of a new full-screen player.
As YouTube stores its videos at the resolution it receives it at, users will not need to re-upload high-quality videos to have them appear at 1080p on the site. Instead the videos will be re-encoded at the higher resolution automatically by YouTube.
Only 10% of current YouTube playbacks are in the 720p higher-quality player, likely due to bandwidth limitations and increased access from smartphone handsets
