Palm announces Pixi – but bet we don't see it in the UK

There was theory not too long ago that Palm was going to be the first high profile consumer electronics victim of the recession. Well in spite of not brilliant sales for the Palm Pre thankfully this doesn’t appear to be the case.

In fact Palm has today announced its second new handset in a while (and also its second to run its new-ish webOS), the Palm Pixi.

Before Brits get too excited the Pre has been on sale in the US for several months already and there is still no sign of its promised O2 British debut. So while the Pixi is slated to hit the US stores by Christmas I think it may be some time, if at all, before we see it in the UK.

The phone itself is a chocolate bar style handset that is apparently Palm’s thinnest so far. Its feature line up – two mega pixel camera, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphones socket, 2.63inch touch screen – suggest this is aimed more at consumers rather than corporates. It does however keep the full QWERTY keypad of the Pre.

With an avalanche of Android handsets now hitting the stores, I can’t see this getting too many takers on this side of the Atlantic. Palm has a history of not always launching its US products in the UK (which may be more to do with UK mobile companies than anything else) and I bet this is one phone that the networks will pass on.
