Orange iPhone.jpgSo Apples and Oranges do mix. But why have the pair managed to agree this deal? Here’s our conspiracy theories. Please add yours in the comments

1 Apple is fed up of the negative comments that O2 is getting on Twitter/Facebook etc and feels that its phone deserves a more realised 3G network.

2 O2 has been begging Apple to sign up another network. The iPhone has stretched the network to its limits and its reputation has take a knock because of this.

3 Apple has loads of spare iPhones as the handset is only really selling well in the UK and the US. It has had a disaster in Russia and Japanese and Indian sales aren’t too healthy. Therefore it needs more networks on board so it can offload them.

4 Apple is going to make the phone available to all UK networks, Vodafone and 3 will be making their announcements next week

5 Apple obviously wants to end its exclusive deal with AT&Tin the US (this is likely to finish in Spring 2010). So it is using the UK as a test bed to see how non-exclusivity deals works in mature smartphone markets.

  • This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. Thanks.

  • It works just fine here in France… Healthy competition has meant we get some quite good deals, though 3G coverage is patchy.. No visual voicemail as yet though!

  • Or the contracted exclusivity period with O2 came to its natural and expected end (as O2 freely admit), Orange were quick to negotiate their deal with Apple and thus be the first to announce.
