30gb-zune.jpgIf you’re a Zune 30 owner – okay, chances are you’re not, but it’s interesting anyway – then you might have noticed that your Zune took a day’s holiday on 31st December. Microsoft has now issued an official response to the problem.

Turns out that the people who thought it might be something to do with the leap year were correct. The internal clock driver couldn’t work out the fact that there were 366 days in this year. The solution? Wait. Come midnight, US west coast time, all the Zune 30s started working perfectly again.

I can confirm that mine’s certainly back to normal. If you’re still having trouble, then try letting the device run out its battery, then charging it again and turning it on. It should then be fine. If not, drop us a line in the comments below.

EDIT: And if you really want the gory details, CrunchGear has them here. But I warn you, there’s code.

  • think you need a bit more of a story with this as this isn’t really a news story in its current form. Perhaps you could write about why you like Michael so much
It is hard to say such a thing is clear.

  • why didn’t this affect the 4 or 8 GB zunes? BTW, my friend’s 30GB zune won’t charge in her or her mom’s computers, she has to use my speaker dock to harge it. does anyone know the story behind that?

    • I suspect it’s because they use a different driver, which didn’t contain the faulty code. Not sure why your friend’s Zune 30 won’t charge on the PC – mine works fine. Is it a faulty cable, perhaps?

  • DOH! so every four years, all 17 Pune… oops I mean Zune owners will have to wait for a day – now that’s what I call GOOD software design – NOT!

    • I imagine they’ll fix it in the next patch.

By the way, if “Pune” was supposed to sound like “puny”, it might interest you to know that Zune rhymes with “moon”, not “loony” 🙂
