No sooner has Nikon come clean with their medium format D3X than they may have been caught pants down with another offering at their ankles. Word has it that the Nikon D400 is next on the list.

It looks like the natural successor to the more compact prosumer D300 and we’ve even got some specs courtesy of Nikon Rumours and CrunchGear.

None of it is confirmed but the highlights include a 14.8-megapixel DX format CMOS sensor (effective 14.3 megapixels), an ISO range of 100 – 6400 which’ll boost to a whopping 50 – 25600 and proper, full, 1080p HD video capture at 24fps. Probably still no audio input though.

If all is to believed, it’ll have the same quick start up and shutter lag as the D700, auto focus fine tuning and chromatic aberration correction. The bad news is that it’s said to cost $2,000. The good news is that it may push the lesser models down in price a little. Nikon, we wait with baited breath. Anyone got any mints?
