Gigjunkie is a social network for UK live music fans

gigjunkie-logo.jpgLive music fans have a tough time of it. You’ve got to contend with awful ticket agencies, heavyhanded security, and crap listings services, and even when you get inside there’s always the risk that you’ll be stood in front of some drunk idiot who’ll hurl abuse and beer at the band throughout the show, ruining your enjoyment.

Well, music fans, there’s a new website that aims to solve at least one of those problems. That of the rubbish listings services. Gigjunkie.net is a “the UK’s definitive and independent Gig Listing”. It aggregates data from loads of sources, and then allows fans, venues and bands to add anything extra.

On top of that, there’s a basic social network, where users can build a profile, and get alerts sent to them when bands they like announce tours. They can also rate gigs they’ve been to, write reviews and post up photos.

The signup process is a little long (minus points for asking for ‘relationship status’, plus points for providing an ‘I have no idea’ option), but it asks for your favourite bands, venues, etc, which is all quite interesting info. There’s a bizarre ‘More Music’ anomaly in the ‘genres’ selection, though.

When it’s complete you get a ‘gig calendar’, which you can populate with stuff you’re going to see soon. I had no difficulties finding venues, or upcoming gigs. I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t message other users (EDIT: Turns out that you can message other users, but you have to connect to them first), or leave notes for them, which will reduce the ‘community’ aspect of the site. I can see that the makers are interested in forming discussion around particular events, though, so it’s understandable.

If you’re an avid Gig-goer, you’ll find lots to like on Gigjunkie. It won’t replace Facebook for you, and it’s not really doing anything that Facebook doesn’t already do, but it’s a well-built site, and worth a look if you’re into live music.

  • Hi,

I use Gig Junkie, its great for getting your gig tickets as it has all the listings in one place.

I agree thoug it needs some work on the social side.

Lets hope they load it up in 2009.

    Happy New Year

  • Thanks for the article Duncan. Great overview. We are working hard to develop the social side of the site and it is possible to message users you have connected to already.
As well as listings we also give away loads of tickets to some great gigs, and our community of users is ever growing and adding some great content.

  • Seeing as that there are now so many social networks catering to such a wide range of niches, my biggest problem is finding ones relevant to me and related to my specific interests or product niches. Google seems to be inefficient and returns alot of irrelevant results. A cool resource that I use is this search engine designed specifically to find social networking sites.
