What’s been the biggest-selling game around the world over the last three months? You’re probably thinking GTA IV or Mario Kart, or perhaps you’re being clever and thinking it’s something weird for girls and old people like Ubisoft’s mind-numbingly odd Imagine: Interior Designer?
If you are, you are WRONG – the best selling game around the entire world is Electronic Arts’ Madden 08, the latest annual update in the long-running US football sim. It shifted a ludicrous 2.994 million copies to inhabitants of Earth, beating Wii Fit (!) into second place, with the bizarre balancing exercise “game” amazingly managing to convince 2.089 million people that what they really need to start getting into is video game yoga.
Only 36,000 of those Madden 08 copies were sold outside of the US, mind, so it’s hardly what you’d call a global phenomenon. The third best-seller during July-September was multi-format smash Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which shifted 1.738 million of what people in the industry refer to as “units”. Fourth was Pokemon Platinum on 1.482 million, with Mario Kart Wii doing a superb 1.468 million.
The stats come from three pillars of thing-counting – the NPD, which counts America, GFK/Chart-Track which do the UK and Europe, plus the much better-named Enterbrain, which keeps count in Japan. They’re official numbers, not estimates based around what someone who works in a game shop thinks, so feel free to quote them knowledgeably.
