Pentax K2000: friendly, entry-level digital SLR for those stepping up from compact cameras

pentax_k2000_dslr.jpgPentax has announced that its latest camera, the K2000, will be launched in November (in the US at least) for a very respectable $699.95 (about £400).

It features a lightweight, compact body, 10.2 megapixels, 2.7-inch TFT LCD, a gyroscopic mechanism for shake reduction — arguably better than software-based systems — and a host of automatic modes. There’s even a Help button which explains settings: great if you’re on the go and don’t want to carry the manual around with you.

The camera features a five-point autofocus system, continuous shooting mode at 3.5 fps, and various in-camera post-processing options.

Maintenance wise, it features a Dust Removal feature, and a grease repellant on the lens.

The whole kit includes the camera body, wireless flash, and PENTAX DA L 18-55mm zoom lens. That’s not a bad deal for anyone on a budget, and while you won’t get the same quality or features as a high-end DSLR, it’s not a bad introduction into doing more than just pointing-and-clicking.

UK availability and pricing to be confirmed.

  • Thanks for the info on the new Pentax. I am looking at entry level Digital SLR cameras, but do you think the higher price is really worth the improved picture? This site http://www.dslrcamerareviews.com was OK, but looking for more advice. I usually read conflicting this about SLR and price. Thoughts? Thanks
