Guess how many people in the UK haven't got internet access at home?

uk-internet-statistics-one-third-no-web.jpgIt’s quite easy to get complacent, sitting here, on the internet all day, with twelve tabs open and a billion RSS feeds firing in enough information to keep a thousand human brains in a comatose state for decades – but not everyone is so switched on. Brace yourselves for an amazing fact.

One third of all households in the UK haven’t got internet access. At all.

No, not broadband – the internet. Not even dial-up. According to the Office for National Statistics, just 65% of homes in the UK have internet access, totalling some 16.46 million households. Of that lot, 86% have broadband. Which still leaves 35% stuck in the 1970s, watching television for fun and… doing whatever people used to do to pass the evenings.

15% of those without the internet said it was due to them not being able to understand how it works, so it’s probably best they never get it – because it’s us lot that’d be round their houses all the time fixing their computers.

  • I put in nearly two hours just yesterday, reinstalling XP on my mum’s knackered old thing.

The government needs to introduce some sort of Computer Proficiency Test before letting just anyone loose on one.
