Due to the absurd cost of motor insurance, my parents never let me take either of their cars out for a spin when I younger – probably for fear that I might take ‘spin’ a little too literally. If they had however, I bet they would have wanted one of these on board.

This is the Car Camera Voyager Pro; it’s a dashboard mounted camera that records video of whatever is happening in front of you, and it will log your every movement on Google Earth thanks to its GPS logger. Handy for keeping track of kids, other road users and cheating spouses.

There’s an important safety aspect to it too. Well, in so much as being able to protect your no claims discount in the event of an accident. If you should happen to have a prang, then you’ve got some handy video evidence, along with exact time and location data, to back you up.

The camera is a 1.3 megapixel device, recording in three levels of quality: 320 x 240 (QVGA) 640 x 480 (VGA) 1280 x 960 (MEGA). The frame rate isn’t going to give you great family viewing though, languishing between 1 – 8 fps (5 is the standard).

You have the choice of starting the recording manually, but the rest of the time, the Voyager Pro will start recording when any “sudden acceleration, braking, and sharp turns” occur, as well as on “back and forth, right and left and up and down vibrations”. In the event of crash, impact sensors activate recording to give you 10 seconds before and 30 seconds after an event.

Recordings are stored on an SD card and the software provided enables playback on a PC. The locational data is all stored with and is compatible with Google Earth.

The Car Camera Voyager Pro is available now for a fairly heft $450.
