Ubisoft calls for Sony to "go back to the drawing board" with the PlayStation Portable.

Games publisher, Ubisoft, has criticised Sony’s PlayStation Portable for its failure to keep pace with the Nintendo DS handheld. UK Managing Director Rob Cooper has said in a recent interview that PSP lacks direction and that Sony has over-complicated and over-priced the console.

Ubisoft currently has no plans to release any further PSP titles this year. “I think Sony needs to show us a bit more about what its plans are to convince the publisher to invest lots more money into it” Cooper said, adding “Especially when you’ve got the DS selling at such a tremendous pace.”

Although the PSP is still going from strength to strength in its native Japan, in both Europe and North American, the Nintendo DS is merrily handing its arse to it. Cooper puts this down to a comparative lack of accessibility: “Sony has gone a little bit too complicated, they’ve over-specced it, the price is too high and they need to go back to the drawing board and start again.”

Cooper doesn’t rule out the possibility of returning to the platform at a later stage, provided Sony can “come out clearly and say, “this is our strategy, this is our process and this is how publishers can get behind it.”” However, with the PSP now approaching its third birthday (in the UK), its age may be becoming a factor as well.
