Apple may have patented solar panel-backed LCD screens but Japanese company Thanko has gone and released a digital audio player that already runs on the power of the sun.

The Solar DAP only has 4GB of internal memory, expandable to 6GB by a miniSD slot, which still isn’t a lot of space to store your music and the screen is only 1.8-inches. So, if you’re going to watch any AVI files, expect a trip to the opticians some time soon.

The important part, of course, is the solar panel itself which you can see propping it up on the picture there. What intensity of light or how fast it can capture the rays is unknown but you can always use the USB cable for power if all else fails.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the solar function is for top up only. Rely on that in the UK on a day like today and you’ll be listening to 3 seconds of music every hour.
