samsung-f400.jpgIt’s rare that a phone manufacturer achieves everything it sets out to with a new model and particularly when they’re aiming for a very specific corner of the market, but Samsung looks to have hit it right on the money with their new F400 music phone.

The F400 is powered by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower technology and if you’re setting your stall out as a music phone, there’s no-one better to be with. The phone has a stereo speaker to enjoy the natural clear sound, boosted by rich Smart Bass, and a 3.5mm jack for headphone appreciation. You want one already, don’t you? It gets better.

Those smart Samsung cookies appreciate that music takes up a lot of space and offer a healthy 1GB memory card along with a microSD slot for up to 8GB more. That’s a fair few tracks.

The slide-style mobile has a very familiar silver wheel for cruising through the menus but my favourite is a shortcut Shazam button on the phone for identifying tracks in your environs or anything playing through the phone’s FM radio. Doubtless the service will still cost you an arm and a leg but it beats dialing 2580.

The phone isn’t WiFi enabled but it’s good for 3g HSDPA-style at a maximum speed of 3.6Mbps – fast enough to download more music comfortably. Naturally it has Bluetooth v2.0 and is topped off by a very respectable 3-megapixel auto-focus camera. Good work Samsung.

The F400 comes in black or white and will be released in France first before the rest of Europe. If it weren’t for the fact that most Samsung operating systems make me want to stamp on their handsets, I’d get my name on the list today. The F400 looks like an excellent and more low-key and individual alternative to an iPhone – big thumb, big up.
