Microsoft boss ribs Apple – good luck with handheld gaming

handheld-gaming.jpgMicrosoft has been enjoying itself ahead of Apple’s expected new launch at WWDC, in June, by saying how relieved they are never to have entered the handheld gaming market.

With a good chance that Senor Jobs will be unveiling some sort of tablet with possible gaming functions, Xbox head honcho Shane Kim said:

“I’m very happy we didn’t get into it, because launching a handheld platform is like launching another Xbox 360. You have to be fully committed, as an organisation, from a resource standpoint, to doing that.”

“Frankly, we’ve got a lot on our plate with Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. We don’t have any experience in that space. Our content assets don’t naturally lend themselves to driving success in that particular market, so we’re happy to let Sony and Nintendo slog it out.”

Kim did admit that any device running Windows Mobile was an opportunity as a games platform from either from the PC or Xbox catalogue but they weren’t about to design any new hardware specifically.

Apple carries with it the weight of the zeitgeist but here’s hoping that it meets its match in the gaming heavyweights. I have nothing against the Jolly Jobber but it’s important to fall on your arse every now and then. Who wants a cross-technology monopoly, anyway – well, apart from him?
