Sony flogs off Berlin's 'Sony Center' HQ at a bargain price
Sony has announced that it is selling its iconic complex in Potsdamer Platz, Berlin. Commonly known as the ‘Sony Center’, it is considered to be one of the most striking new landmarks in the capital and draws in 8 million tourists each year.
Designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn, the complex consists of seven glass and steel structures surrounding a light-flooded plaza and capped by a large roof. From above it looks quite like a limpet.
It cost Sony something in the region of 750 to 800 million Euros to build the complex in the first place, but it is believed that following a failure in efforts to turn Potsdamer Platz into the capital’s new commercial district, Sony is being forced to take a loss on this sale. Nothing has been officially confirmed, but estimates put the sale price at 600 million Euros.
Sony companies already located on the premises will stay there as tenants and the buildings will keep the name ‘Sony Center’. Rumours that it would be renamed the 02 Arena Berlin were proved unfounded on account of me just making them up.
