News from the wireless home zeitgeist now, with HP’s new MediaSmart Receiver. It’s a set-top box that slots into HP’s MediaSmart range, which until now has focused on HDTVs with network connectivity inside. However, the new receiver works with all HDTVs, including non-HP models.

It’s piano-black, like so many gadgets at this year’s CES – so long brushed-silver and white, you’re so old hat. There’s ambient blue lighting for a high-tech feel though. The idea is that you stream digital content from PCs around the house, including photos, music and video.

Meanwhile, HP has upgraded its MediaSmart LCD TVs, boosting their visual performance, and tweaking the design a bit, complete with a backlit remote control. HP has also upgraded its MediaSmart Server software, adding McAfee anti-virus software, and tying in Photo Webshare and iTunes.

  • A handsome looking box with a lot of powerful features… It should sell well.
