Think your 42-inch screen is impressive? Well, it’s going to be old hat by 2015, with average screen sizes set to rise to 60-inch says Sharp.

In the last 12 months, sales of 46 inches and above LCDs have risen 272%, suggesting big screen TVs are becoming the norm rather the exception. Sales of 40-42 inch TVs have also increased by 128% and sales of 37-inch screens by 308%. Although with house sizes getting no bigger, you wonder where all these monster screens might go.

According to Mike Gabriel, head of marketing and communications for Sharp Electronics (UK): “Big screens are no longer for just shop windows or shiny office receptions. The demand for HD-ready 1080p picture quality in the home has led to an increase in both the affordability and availability of larger TVs. People can now expect a home cinema experience from their TV and technology that was once associated with the rich and famous is now accessible to homes across the country.”

  • It’s 2014 now and the average TV size at the end of last year was, according to real figures, about 33″. So 5 years later and it should be obvious that Sharp were talking utter bollocks. Probably they were trying to get people to buy bigger TV sets so they can make more money.

Personally, I have a real problem with large TV sets as the amount of light they produce is too much and will lead to your sleep being disrupted. We are now sleeping much less than we used to and it is because of larger TV sets and other gadgets like tablets and phones being used late at night. I refuse to even have a TV in my bedroon and i sleep better than a lot of people I know. So manufacterers like Sharp can go to hell.

  • I think it would have made sense to tell us the average screen size at the moment…

    • I think the average size tv right now is 50″….its like every 2 years the price drops to consumers…2 years ago 42″ was huge…50″ is the standard….I made a mistake once…went from a 42″ to 60″ then back down to a 50″ and noticed a big difference in viewing…then i went to a 65″ then back to another 50″ and regret selling the 65″. So i made the final decision and returned the 50″ and got a 60″ and could not be happier…even thou I should have kept the 65″ when i had it, the 60″ makes viewing feel big again
