Asus is aiming to sell a staggering 3.8 million Eee PCs next year – some with Windows on

eee_pc-windows.jpgAsus came out with the 3.8 million sales target for Eee PC in an internal memo to staff – something the chunky and adorable little laptop deserves, although the fact that it’s currently sold out everywhere in the whole world doesn’t give us a huge amount of faith that the Asus manufacturing facilities can churn out that many of the uber-portable laptops.

The feature that’ll push the Eee PC to the ‘next level’ is Windows. Currently the Eee PC ships with a very cool version of Linux that’s lovely and easy to use and one of the reasons the thing’s so damn cheap – but a lot of casual buyers out there are scared shitless by the thought of having to cope with Linux.

An anonymous Asus source that hopefully isn’t just some loser on the internet having a laugh, said “Microsoft contacted us to offer Windows XP with discount licensing” after its launch, adding that future Eee PCs could ship with a stripped-down version of XP that’s currently being fobbed off on – sorry, distributed in – emerging markets.

Although, and we don’t want to sound ungrateful or anything, one of the charms of the Eee PC is its kooky Linux OS. Having an Eee PC running a slower and worse version of Windows would be a bit of a shame.

  • I just ditched my pre-installed Linux, and replaced it with my own custom stripped-down version of XP.

Today, I’m asking myself why did I wait so long?

Not only is the installation smaller than the Linux was, I can now run everything, the windows are now set to fit the Eee’s odd display, and it runs just as fast as it did with the Linux. For real, it does!

With the Linux, I felt like a 3rd-class citizen (behind Mac!), and installing anything new was unlikely to work, or at least work well. Also, I had to follow the Linux guru’s gibberish instructions for everything and anything.

Now, I’m the boss of what’s on my computer and what’s not, and I don’t need no help from nobody .

Linux is find, I’m sure if you’re a fanboy of it, but for the rest of us, good riddance.

Note: Eee’s come with a CD containing Win XP drivers AND instructions for how to install XP over-top Linux (Xandros).

I will probably up the RAM from 512MB to 1GB just because it’s cheap to do so, and can’t hurt, but the computer hardly seems to be complaining with 512MB. I have 2.8GB free out of the 4GB SSD (after having installed a bunch of apps), and a 4GB SDHC card for docs storage and any apps that will allow me to install from there.

Now, it’s the perfect (cheap) UMPC.
