We knew it was coming, but this morning Vodafone went live with MusicStation, the £1.99-a-week music subscription service from Omnifone. They even persuaded Girls Aloud to totter along to the launch and grab the first downloads through the service (as well as stamping on computer keyboards to demonstrate that iTunes is OLD HAT).

It’s launching with 1.2 million tracks available, as well as live charts, personalised music news, and social networking features letting users sign up friends and share their playlists.

Meanwhile, retailer Phones 4u is going to be selling some special Music Meal Deal price plans, bundling MusicStation with Vodafone tariffs. MusicStation will work on 13 Vodafone handsets from today, you can download the app from Vodafone Live if you’ve got: an LG KU990; Nokia 5310, 6500 Classic, 7500, E65, N70, N73, N81 8GB, N95, or N95 8GB; a Samsung F700; or a Sony Ericsson K770i, K800i, K810i, K850i, V630i, W580i, W810i, W880i or W910i.

Interesting points: the Nokia N81 and N95 8GB also work with the Nokia Music Store, giving users a choice of how to get their music. Also, Omnifone says that more Vodafone handsets will support MusicStation in the coming weeks, including BlackBerry handsets.

It’s an exciting day for mobile music, anyway, considering the Nokia Store also launched this morning. I’ve already reviewed that, and will be taking a look at MusicStation in the next day or so as well, to see how it shapes up. If you’re a Vodafone customer with one of the handsets listed above, though, you can try it for yourself by entering your details at the signup page below.
