What could be more geeky than huddling in front of the TV once a year, watching Test The Nation: The National IQ Test with your family or housemates, too busy proving your IQ to perve on Phillip Schofield or Danny Wallace (or even Anne Robinson, if you’re mentally deranged)?

Nintendo has come up with the answer, by launching the Britain’s Brainiest Family competition, which kicks off this Saturday. The idea behind it is that you and your family (oh, how I wish they’d accept groups of friends – surely friends are the 21st century family?) compete against other families across Britain, playing Big Brain Academy on the Wii, with some amazing prizes being on offer. Winners of each of the 10 heats will walk away with a Wii and family holiday, with the overall winner’s kids getting their university tuition fees paid for. I can imagine a lot of kids will be content winning just the heat and not the overall competition.

Starting in Glasgow this Saturday, the competition will visit each major UK city until the final happens on November 4th in London. Cynics will no doubt argue that this is a big publicity stunt on Nintendo’s behalf, aiming on boosting sales of the Wii (as if they need it), but when they’re promoting intelligence and family bonding, who can argue with that, really? Especially when the prizes are so attractive…

By the way, anyone else think the ‘father’ in the advertising campaign looks suspiciously like Phil Daniels, of Eastenders and Blur’s ‘Parklife’ fame?
