Sony has announced its new α700 digital SLR, aimed at serious photo enthusiasts and semi-professionals.

It features a 12.24 megapixel (effective) Exmor CMOS sensor, which, according to the press release, “utilises cultivated CCD imaging and original Column A/D conversion technologies to deliver high-speed and high-picture quality”. Right…

Apparently this means that analogue-to-digital conversion uses dedicated converters located close to each element array on the sensor itself, reducing noise, and further complemented by on-chip noise reduction after digitisation.

Sony’s BIONZ processing engine then performs further RAW noise reduction, before compression and encoding.

The α700 features a maximum sensitivity of ISO 3200, and features Super SteadyShot optical image stabilisation which is compatible with the complete range of α-mount lenses. There’s also high-speed auto-focus with 11 focus points and 11 lines.

The camera has 14 “Image Styles”, including ‘Deep’, ‘Autumn’, ‘Vivid’ and ‘Landscape’, for the instant creation of ‘moods’. Contrast, sharpness, zone matching and other parameters can then be customised further for fine-tuning of a chosen creative effect.

The α700 can shoot in 16:9 aspect ratio, and store images in a new RAW compressed mode. It also offers up to 5fps continuous shooting and a 3-inch 921,000 pixel photo-quality LCD.

The camera is constructed in tough magnesium alloy and a reinforced aluminium alloy chassis, with weather-resistant silicon protected buttons.

Price and availability to be confirmed.
