Rumours of £299 PS3 gather pace, despite Sony's denial

ps3-price-cut-uk.jpgPS3 is still too expensive. Sony argues the point, of course, but the sales figures show that it’s suffering in comparison with the cheaper Xbox 360 and Wii. So it’s no surprise that when a rumour springs up about a PS3 price cut, it spreads like wildfire.

Such is the case this week, with well-sourced reports claiming that Sony’s about to unveil a cut-down PS3 for £299, with a smaller 40GB hard drive, no USB ports and no backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games. The lack of USB ports strikes a false note, since that’s how you charge the Sixaxis controllers.

Sony’s denial… well, it’s not exactly a denial. It’s described the reports as “rumour and speculation”, which neatly sidesteps the question of whether they’re accurate rumour and speculation. What price an announcement tomorrow to try and take some of the shine off Xbox 360’s Halo 3 launch?

  • What a load of rubbish. Cutting the price to £299 might raise a few catcalls from Xbox 360 and Wii fanboys, but you’d see most gutter blogs like ourselves acclaiming it as a chance for Sony to seize back the initiative.

  • I love how Microsoft start a few rumours prior to Halo3 launch, about a cheaper PS3, so any potential purchasers are stalled.

Every gutter blog on the net (this one included), then spews the information out as news.

    Talk about Microsoft’s mouthpiece.
