Google wants you for the first private Moon mission

google-moon.jpgWe’ve already had the X-Prize space flight contest that saw SpaceShipOne become the first private craft to orbit the Earth – now Google is offering a prize fund of $30m to the first private company that can stick a ship on the Moon.

They won’t be able to fake it again, though – Google wants any landing to be proven by a space rover carrying out a 500m lunar mission and gathering a specific set of pictures and data to earn its makers $20m.

A $5m wooden spoon is on offer to the second private firm that gets to the Moon, with another $5m up for bonus achievements – like taking photos of the Apollo landers, finding ice and travelling onwards afterwards.

The closing date for getting your digital camera to the Moon is 2014. Better start making room in the garage.
