Gateway offer up "One", leaning iMac killer?

gateway_one_pc.jpgGateway has launched a desktop PC named simply “One”, which it possibly thinks is a new iMac killer.

The system is housed in a single metal shell that’s 3.6 inches deep, with the front face done out completely in black to hide the monitor border. It also features gigabit Ethernet, four USB ports, and AV ports which plug in to the external power adapter. It also features a slot loading DVD burner, three extra USB ports, Firewire and audio ports in the unit itself.

The machines have specs up to 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mobility Radeon HD 2600 video card, 3GB memory, and 500GB hard drive. The high end model will retail for US$1800, though no word on whether they’ll make their way over to the UK, or whether you’ll be able to pick one up in your local Tesco supermarket.

Yes, I’m an Apple fan, so I’m bound to cite such things as Vista versus OS X, as well as the visual design not quite looking right on the Gateway, whose side view makes me itch simply to push it and watch it topple.

  • The hardware’s a poor copy, the OS is a poor copy, the price is a shade less but for a much lower spec’d machine. It’s a Kia compared to a BMW for a similar price point.

Why not just buy an iMac these days? (you can even run Windows to remind yourself how badly-designed software used to work)
