After closing Connect, Sony rumoured to be plotting new PS3 / PSP / Bravia downloads store

ps3-store.jpgSony’s recently-closed Connect music downloads store is unlamented, to say the least. Yet the timing seemed a bit strange, given that everyone from Nokia and Amazon through to Wal-Mart is getting into the music downloads market. Now they’ve been joined by… Sony?

That’s what the Wall Street Journal is reporting, anyway, suggesting that Sony plans to launch a new music AND video download store, for use through PS3, PSP and Bravia HDTVs. It certainly makes sense for PS3, where music and video downloads are a no-brainer.

But the devil will be in the detail, particularly when it comes to what DRM (if any) Sony puts in place – one of the big factors in Connect’s failure. If it’s a closed environment where your purchased songs and videos can only be played on Sony products, it’d be a shame. A predictable shame, but a shame nonetheless.

  • Er, Connect doesn’t close for at least another six months. Are you paid by Apple to claim otherwise?

And crippling DRM never harmed iTunes. How many devices can you play your iTunes tracks on? My Connect tracks play on my PMP, PSP and mobile phone…..
