I-MU Vibro – flat surfaces become speakers

Not to be confused with the Nimzy Vibro, the I-MU Vibro speaker is a similar piece of technology that uses vibrations to turn any flat surface into an audio speaker.

But how? Well, it uses a small piece of a material called Terfenol-D, originally used by the US Navy for sonar work. The Terfenol is placed within an aluminium case and a coil wrapped round it. When electricity is passed through the coil the Terfenol expands slightly creating a force of 400 pounds – when it’s attached to a flat surface it transmits electronic signals into mechanical energy causing the flat surface to vibrate and broadcasts the sound.

All you need to do is hook up your music player, plug it in and enjoy up to 30w of sound. Available now, it retails for £49.95.
