borders-downloads.jpgCosmopolitan book/cafe chain Borders has announced plans to send sample chapters of new releases to customers’ mobiles, to get literary types into a HOT FRENZY before books are released.

A report in Marketing Week highlighted the plan, which lets readers browse a list of upcoming books on the company’s web site – then get preview chunks sent to their phones for free.

Then, for reasons we can’t really work out, the trialists get the chance to buy the book at a generous 20 percent discount if they like what they’ve sampled.

Borders neglects to mention that a vast number of books are already freely available in their entirety in the public domain to download and read on your mobile, thanks to expired copyrights on older works. See a list of what you can legally read for free here.
