Sony launches DVP-FX850 Portable DVD player

It seems like something of a backward step for Sony to be producing portable DVD players. But we all have large collections of discs, so why not? And the DVP-FX850 certainly does it with a bit of style.

The portable player folds out clamshell-style, but also rotates a full 180 degrees thanks to an articulated hinge – which means you can set it up just about anywhere. And once you have set it up, you can watch video on a scratch-resistant eight-inch widescreen display. There’s also a 12-bit 108MHz video DAC (typical of a full-size domestic DVD player) for smoother playback, integrated stereo speakers and a slimline remote. Battery life is strong too – around six hours, with a car adaptor kit if you run short.

Playback is via standard DVD plus just about all the recordable disc formats. There’s also music playback, picture viewing, USB connectivity and two headphone sockets if you want to share.

No news of a specific date or price as yet, we’ll keep you posted.
