google_translate_beta.gifGoogle has announced that it’s added new features to Google Translate to make it easier to search for and read web pages in other languages.

Google already offers basic translation services on web pages and language phrases. Their updated system allows anyone to search for web pages in another language, and read the results in their own language.

It works by allowing the user to type in a search phrase in their own language, which Google then translates to the chosen language, searches for, and then returns web pages but translated back to the user’s native language.

For example, you could search for “St. Petersburg restaurants” in Russian, which would be translated to Санкт-Петербург рестораны, searched for, then results returned translated back to English.

By default, the search results show the translated pages in the left-hand column, and the original pages in the right-hand column.

It’s available in 12 languages: English, Arabic, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Traditional), and Chinese (Simplified), and uses machine translation, or automated language translation.
