fring.gifFrom today, mobile users who can access The Cloud’s Wi-Fi hotspots will be able to make free mobile VoIP calls to a variety of messenger networks and fring users, thanks to a customised version of the fring mobile VoIP client.

This joint service, announced today by fring and The Cloud, lets users call and chat for free to users of fring, Skype, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, and SIP contacts, via The Cloud’s Wi-Fi network, as well as other Wi-Fi, 3G, and GPRS networks.

fring-enabled mobile phones will automatically recognise, login and register on The Cloud network to enable users to use VoIP.

Last month, The Cloud switched on Europe’s most comprehensive <a href=https://www.techdigest.tv/2007/04/free_wifi_in_lo.html”>Wi-Fi network covering the City of London.

fring’s technology is already available on Symbian handsets. Of course, all this lovely free mobile VoiP goodness is dependent on your mobile operator not blocking such services, which they’re currently not averse to doing in a bid to protect their revenue and bandwidth.

Great idea in principle, though. You can read Stuart’s interview with The Cloud’s Owen Geddes on why public Wi-Fi isn’t just for suits.
