Surgical sponges and other equipment being left in patients constitute a serious health hazard, but so much hardware is involved in even simple surgery that keeping track can be very difficult. RFID is ideal for this situation, adding an insignificant extra expense (in view of what surgery already costs) and allowing the staff to easily detect whether the sponge is in your trash or in your neck. Ask for it by name next time you have a triple bypass. [GT]
