Mozartkugel – a portable music player from days gone by

Everyone has a portable media player these days – it’s something very much of this era, just as the cassette Walkman defines the 80s. But the basic technology to take music with you has been around for years – and is used in Mozartkugel.

Mozartkugel, designed by Adam und Harborth in Berlin, is essentially a portable music player using technology from a couple of hundred years back. Available in a choice of light beech or dark oak, this solid wooden ball (a perfect sphere apparently) plays a spot of Mozart via its 18-note chime, either when the ball is standing still or moving.

And it doesn’t need a rechargeable battery – just a wind up from the key. Sold in a gift box, it retails for $69 (around £35).
