Blu-ray vs HD DVD – looks like Blu-ray is winning
It’s still early days in the high-definition battle, but if new figures from the US are a good indicator, Blu-ray is already pulling ahead.
Of the high-definition discs bought by consumers in the first quarter, 70% were in the Blu-ray format, with just 30% HD DVD, according to the latest sales figures from US trade publication Home Media Magazine. That means nearly three out of every four high-definition discs sold in March were Blu-ray.
As a direct comparison, Warner Home Video released “The Departed” on 13th February in both formats. Between then and 31st March, consumers bought 53,640 copies of the film on Blu-ray Disc and 31,590 on HD DVD. And just to add to HD DVD’s woes, eight of the 10 top-selling high-definition titles in the first quarter were on Blu-ray disc.
A number of the major film studios support Blu-ray exclusively, with just Universal going for HD DVD as their sole high-definition format.
