UK download site Wippet has indicated it will be the first to sell The Beatles as digital downloads in a press release – but not according to the band’s label, EMI.

EMI claims the statement is untrue and has asked for it to be removed. However, that isn’t an end to the matter, with EMI still believed to be on the verge of releasing The Beatles’ back catalogue as digital downloads.

Who that deal is with remains to be seen, but it could be with Apple after the two Apples sorted out their legal differences. And ithe deal should be a very lucrative one. According to HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo, a top 10 made up entirely of Beatles’ tracks “would be almost guaranteed” in the first week of sale.
