Sony is once more pushing AVCHD (that’s HD recording onto conventional discs – more about it here). Following on from last year’s HDR-UX1E come two new models – the HDR-UX7E and HDR-UX3E.

The new models are lighter/smaller, but still store high def pictures on readily-available 8cm DVD discs. DVD+R DL (Dual Layer) technology allows both models to capture almost an hour’s worth of HD pictures and sound (in LP mode), with playback on any HD-ready television set via a connected AVCHD-compatible Blu-ray player (including PS3) or by wiring up the camcorder to your HD-ready TV via HDMI.

Both the UX3E and UX7E feature a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens plus the latest ClearVid CMOS Sensor technology to boost picture quality. You can also capture still images up to 6.1MP resolution, boosted by Super SteadyShot Optical Image Stabilisation (on the UX7E) for images with reduced blurring. Like the recently-announced HC5E and HC7E, they also feature x.v.Colour for more lifelike colours, along with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround recording, Dual Rec (video and still imaging) Clear Photo LCD screen, manual and automatic control and the InfoLITHIUM battery for up to 5 hours continuous recording.

Both the Sony Handycam HDR-UX7E and HDR-UX3E will be available throughout Europe from March 2007 and will be available to pre-order from the Sony Style store.
