CES 2007: ASUS W5fe
ASUS had one of the better stands at the Unveiled session this afternoon and the W5fe was one of the first things to catch my eye. It is an enhanced version of the already successful W5, optimised for Vista and with the addition of a nifty ‘auxiliary display’ running Vista’s SideShow on the outside edge.
This is simply a 2.8” LCD with four directional buttons along with a few others that let you navigate through a few basic functions without opening up the laptop properly. Certainly there’s a lot of potential in the idea, and the guy at the stand spent so long talking us through it we barely got to see what the laptop looked like open. Currently you’ve got a few media functions which I’m fairly certain will let you load up and listen to your tunes without wasting too much of your battery.
Other functions take the idea even further – you’ll appernetly be able to look at photos, play mini games like Solitaire, check appointments and have it act as a navigator for you. Very little of which had actually been implemented in the demo version, but I’ve no doubt there’ll be more on the horizon and homebrewers will surely be able to have a lot of fun with it – big respect to the first person to OS X running in the SideShow screen.
