Toshiba unveils 1.8-inch drive with 100GB capacity

Good news for manufacturers of pocked-sized portable player and lovers of all things small – Toshiba has announced a new 1.8-inch HDD, packing in 100GB of storage.

The increased capacity on the MK1011GAH drive is down to perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and an improved error correction code. For the technical amongst you, the drive packs in 240.8 megabits per square millimetre (155.3 gigabits per square inch).

The drive, which weighs just 59g, will go into mass production from January 2007, with 100GB player doubtless following soon after.
