In our increasingly high-definition world, a number of manufacturers are now releasing upscaling DVD players to transform your collection of DVD films into near high definition quality for watching on your shiny new LCD or plasma screen.

Helios have announced that their H4000 upscaling DVD player is now available throughout Europe and the US.

It will output standard DVD content to all three HD formats (720p, 1080i and 1080p) via its HDMI or component outputs, as well as a host of PC-friendly resolutions via VGA.

It will also output at standard DVD resolution via HDMI if you choose to use an external video scaler, though why you’d buy this if you already had a dedicated scaler, I’m not sure.

Audio wise, it outputs both stereo and 5.1 channel audio.

It will also playback MPEG4 (DivX, Xvid, MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4) video files.

The slim machine is decked in black with orange LEDs, and looks good, though it looks as if you won’t be able to stack anything on top of it as some of its controls are on the top side of the player.

It ships worldwide, with a price of $169 which is about £90.
