I’m a ‘chipper’ smoker, which means I smoke about a pack a week; go through phases of more and phases of not smoking at all. So I’m better suited than most to say that addiction is a complicated phenomenon, unique to each person. It’s clear from the huge raft of comments on this blog post from someone who was addicted to World of Warcraft that MMORPGs can exert the same self-destructive pull we normally associate with chemical abuse. Considering that nicotine addiction has a strong genetic component, it’s quite likely that there’s a physiological basis for all significant addictions. The truth shall set you free. [GT]
